The specific expectations of an advisor depends on the expectation from the Registered Campus Organization's needs and the advisor's leadership style and level of commitment. The following is a list of possible expectations that can be used as a starting point for a discussion between the advisor and the organization. It is important to clarify the role of the advisor for the organization from the very beginning.
- Utilize the Office of Campus Organizations within Student Life and Leadership as a resource for questions about advisement.
- Schedule regular meetings with organization leadership.
- Assist the organization in the collection of transition materials between leaders such as financial records, signer information, constitution and by-laws and contact information for alumni.
- Attend meetings (only if requested by the organization).
- Understand and interprete University policies for Registered Campus Organizations (click here for policy).
- Explain University policy to organization leadership.
- Help organization leadership with internal organization logistics such as constitution revisions, agendas, and how to handle particular situations.
- Provide any relevant event updates to assist the organization leaders.
- Guide the organization leaders through difficult decisions.
- Inform the clubs of any infractions of their bylaws, codes, standing rules, and constitution.
- Advise the club to be aware of campus perceptions when planning events or social gathering (e.g., dance party themes).
- Help mediate interpersonal conflicts that arise.
- Provide guidance in leadership development/skills workshops.
- Accompany the organization leader when dealing with conflicts with University faculty or staff.
- Become familiar with University facilities, services, and procedures, which affect group activities.
- Recommend programs, speakers, etc.
- Written goals and objectives
- Advance notification of meetings and events the organization may want you to attend
- Awareness and adherence to all university policies
- Support in understanding the University's mission
- Open communication
- Commitment to the organization
