What is Public Health Brigades?
Public Health Brigades is but one of 9 branches underneath the umbrella organization of Global Brigades. PHB consists of student volunteers interested in improving quality of life in rural communities. We approach global health issues through public health, more specifically through preventive and educational efforts. Throughout the school year we focus on fundraising for our trip and preparing an education charla for the local school in-country.
What do we do on a brigade?
We have 7-day brigades to Honduras during spring break or summer. For the first four days, we work closely with three families and several local masons to improve basic sanitation infrastructure through the collective construction of a hygiene station (containing a latrine, water-storage unit, shower), eco-stoves, and concrete floors. We also conduct an education charla for the local school to promote public health through education and distribution of both hygienic and educational supplies collected throughout the school year via donations.
